Spreading the Word about being Eco-Friendly!

Ala Moana Beach Clean-Up

Picture
On Monday, October 5, 2009, Aina to Kai decided to go to Ala Moana Beach Park to pick up trash, recycables, and many other objects that were left on the beach.  To our surprise, we were able to collect around 20 pounds of trash.  The park officials, who go around the beach to pick up filled trash bags and replace them with new ones, even thanked us for helping out.  What a great way to start off the Lexus Eco Challenge!

University of Hawaii Manoa Seminars

Picture
On Thursdays, the college of engineering hosted seminars about the greatest concerns about the world's problems today. We were able to get a glimpse of how we could solve these problems and see possible things we could do for now.

KCAA Clean-Up

Picture
Saturday, October 10, 2009 was reserved for the KCAA Clean-Up in Kalihi.  During this time, we were able to help parents clean children's toys, pick up rubbish, and trim trees and bushes that have overgrown.  Although this may sound like a typical clean-up, we were able to suggest Environmentally Friendly Cleaning products, which were used in exchange for the regular toxic cleaning products and reduced the amount of water used by gallons.

Puahalo Community Home Clean-Up

Picture
Residents at the Puahalo Community Homes offered us a chance to help during their Community Beautification Day on Friday, October 23,2009.  Aina to Kai group members saw a glimpse of the amount of trash these families needed to live with, right in front of their homes.  We were welcomed just like family and were able to take action to help not only the comminity, but also the Earth.  This clean-up inspired Aina to Kai members to develop a better relationship with the people in this community to maintain a beautiful Earth, right in front of their own homes.

National Make A Difference Day- W.R. Farrington High School

Picture
Our school, W.R. Farrington High School, set up a school wide Make a Difference Day on Saturday, October 24, 2009.  During this event, we were able to work with other students and staff members to beautify our school.  Each group was assigned different jobs such as: picking up rubbish, planting plants and trees around the campus, and scrubbing down the walls and floors to make our school more cleaner.

Kalakaua Middle School Presentation

Picture
Kalakaua students had a chance to learn interesting facts and get involved in helping the Earth during our presentation.  There, we shared our knowledge on what we have learned throughout our journey of the Lexus Eco-Challenge.  Unexpectedly, all of the students participated in our recycling game and learned many new facts about preserving the land and conserving water.  This outcome was better than what we expected!

Kalakaua Middle School Clean Up

Picture
Like what we did for the National Make A Difference day at our school, we were able to participate in one of our feeder school's make a difference day as well.   Along the sides of the middle school students, we were able to collect 10 bags of green waste as well as 3 bags full of trash.

Puahalo Children Tutoring & Presentation

Picture
During Hawaii pubic school's 2nd furlough Friday, we visited Puahalo Housing to do a tutoring session for students ranging from kindergarten to 9th grade. After helping them with their homeworks, we educated them about recycling through fun activties and games. The children participated by actually saying their own ideas on how they can recycle at home and in their school.

 Kalihi Stream Clean Up

Picture
Known as the dirtest parts of our community, we were aimed to take on the challenge and make a change to it.  Many throws their trash down on to the stream and not caring was a great concern to us.  On Saturday, October 31, we were able to clean up the stream along with another high school, Mckinley High School, a middle school, Kalakaua Middle School, and lastly, an elementary school, Fern Elementary.  About a couple of hours later, we were able to haul out 650 pounds of trash out of the stream.  We were dismayed to see things like grills, air conditioners, and other big appliances we normally use through out our lives.  Thankfully, we were able to prevent more damaged that was being done to the stream.

Making Cloth Banners!

Picture
Not many people know the real facts about recycling, waste management, and water conservation. Through these banners, which are made out of recycled bed sheets and used clothes, we promoted to many students and teachers the importance of preserving our water and land. We had a total of three huge banners and two small sheets posted in classrooms, school entrance, amphiteather, and the school fence. Hopefully, through these banners, we'll be able to bring awareness to the issues concerning our community.

Honors Chemistry Awareness

Picture
Last November 3, 2009, our team had a brief presentation to our Honors Chemistry class. We showed them two of our awareness videos about water conservation and waste management. The videos provided them facts and figures about the issues the Earth is facing today. These hopefully made them realize that our generation needs to change our habits on waste management/water conservation for a better tomorrow.

Kapalama Elementary Presentation

Picture
Kapalama Elementary is a public school in our area that our team considered to have a presentation on. We exhibited a skit infront of A+ students, which basically demonstrated how the kids should treat our natural resources.
